Election versus
Inauguration: The Big and Personal Picture
November 29,
2008
There's
a vital difference between a political election and an inauguration. When
someone is elected, they've in a great sense won a contest. But
to be inaugurated is to be vested with power. So when someone wins
a presidential election yes - they've won the right to be inaugurated.
But they're not president yet. They don't get to make the big decisions.
And that's just what's being seen in the United States, although this
idea of having been chosen versus getting the rights of operation
are applicable in many ways from top to bottom, around the globe. Governments,
corporations, societal groups…even families go through this stuff. Think
not? Well, ever hear a parent chose one of the kids to do some job then
tell them to 'hold on a minute…' before they get to it, either because
it isn't 'time yet' or because first mom or dad has to spell out all the
rules?
It's
really strangely all the same: since the recent US presidential election
(of November 4th) Barack Obama has met with any number of people giving
him everything from 'how to's to security briefings on what's going on.
But most
to the point with regards to this election, the election itself was held
under the auspices of Pluto in Sagittarius and the inauguration (January
20, 2009) will take place under Pluto in Capricorn.
Sagittarius
is a fire sign and fire signs espouse the idea, the ideal, the theory
of the thing. Fire signs are famous for their ability to get in and play
the game, do the connecting and networking (which would be why the Internet
and cell phone/texting technologies arose while Pluto was in Sagittarius).
Fire signs are very good at whipping up emotions - uniting and factionalizing
at the same time. Ideally everyone gets on the same page but when Pluto
is in the final degrees of any sign it tends to elicit through obsessions.
So with the election having taken place during a period of dramatic fire
sign excitement, its no surprise that every Sagittarian 'facet' from the
media to education (college students) to the legal system (through questions
of right to vote) to religion (and religious values) were aroused.
So the
election happened, and as Thanksgiving arrived and Pluto moved to commit
to its passage of Capricorn, the excitement over the election settled
into a hard core recognition of what's really at stake. The attacks in
Mumbai, India have driven home that the world is all too real and all
too dangerous, that all it takes is a very small number of people to disrupt
a city, a nation - even the world.
But lest
we all get into a panic, it pays to reconsider…and in this we can all
see how almost miraculously this electional process in the United States
has presented us all with a commentary of great clarity. Pluto moved into
Sagittarius back in 1996, and since then, we have all moved more and more
towards a life in which what we elected to be was all important.
Yet though knowing you have the freedom to think and explore and be creative
in and with your life is vital and important, at the end of Pluto in Sagittarius
we have all also been brought back to hard core realities about values,
about what it takes to survive in this world. The idyllic paradise where
we can travel anywhere and be safe anywhere isn't realistic. Given the
world-wide economic crash, indulging within our little circle without
making a contribution to the world for which we are duly compensated becomes
a non-viable option as well. This is all very Pluto in Capricorn, as Capricorn
is all about hard work and contributing to the society. Many think of
this sign as that of social status and without question it is the sign
of governance and leadership - but that's just the point - those who lead,
those who hold social power are those who take a measure of their selves
and their time to contribute, for which they are duly respected, rewarded
and given more opportunities to excel.
Therein
lies an important concept, for under Pluto in Capricorn it's what you
prove you can do and do well which earns the opportunity. Having the diploma
or the 'in' through knowing someone now only gets you to the door. It's
what you do after you get through that door - and the morals you exhibit
through your choice of how you use your time (for self gain? for contribution?)
which generally shapes the reactions of others and ultimately, the success
from which you will derive your satisfaction. Or lack thereof.
Barack
Obama has to wait until January 20th to have power vested in him as President
of the United States. But each one of us has already been vested with
the power to build or become bitterly disappointed. The hard part is letting
go of the old ways - the dreaming as a means of motivation. But if you're
willing to take on the effort required to build the life you have been
given over a decade to dream up, now you actually can get somewhere.
And that
folks, is very good news.
