Metaphysical Year End Musings by Boots Hart, CAP

Metaphysical Year End Musings
December 27, 2008

There are many ways to look at the zodiac. At one level it describes well the stages of one's individual life. Planetary motions through the zodiac time opportunities, the rise and fall of nations and the challenges to careers, relationships and aspirations.

We live in critical times which are hard for us all. Many are having a tough time financially. Others are having health or job problems, relationship issues - or a combination of many things. And it isn't just us humans - nations, corporations, forests, animals and fish - they're all having a tough time. And who knows - maybe despite their reputation as survivors, maybe cockroaches are having a tough time too. It's not exactly a conversation I want to spend much time on, but the image of a Mr. Cockroach scratching his head (with one antenna) while telling Mrs. Cockroach that he'd better get down to cockroach union hall does spring to mind.

But back to the point. Why now? What good is going to come out of all of this? Given that we're moving into the Age of Aquarius, things are supposed to get more equal, more free. But for that to be true, lots of powerful structures have to go, and there's nothing messier than uprooting entrenched power. The rich, the powerful hold on to their advantages while the middle class and poor cling to what they've got. But existence and time are more powerful than any of us: what's going to happen is going to happen.

And if everything which has been falls down, rich, middle class and poor are all going to have a hard time, but today's rich may well initially suffer most. Why? Because one of the curious things about money is how it so often renders people helpless - and by a generation or so down the line, relatively inflexible - sometimes unskilled. It's the magnates who aren't going to know how to survive in a truly troubled society.

But poor people? Poor people know how to survive being poor. They know how to just barely make ends meet. And this odd conjunction of human conditions…the privileged, so newly stumbled, and the long deprived may just work wonders for the whole human race - and in the end thus make life better for us all. How? Well, in such a situation, while I'm sure many an aggrieved poor soul will get into dealing out huffy doses of 'See? It ain't so fun, is it?' - in the end the one thing people at the bottom seem to know better than those at the top is that being human really counts. It's not the trappings, it's the spirit. It's that we're here. And alive. And meant to help each other, despite our differences. It's part of our heritage, part of why the ancients despised those who wouldn't share with strangers - even those born as enemies of their tribe.

So after being annoyed and giving a bunch of cold shoulder, those folks who used to be at the bottom of a big pile are likely to help those new to struggling with terrible times. And when that happens, we're likely to get treated to a whole lotta People Magic going around.

For one, in helping out the less fortunate will recognize their power - what they know counts! They know how to survive. They're in the position to be the magnanimous hero. To be sure there will be some stinkers in the pack (we are talking about human beings, after all) but those who get past injuries passed and on to teaching out of the PPSPB (Poor Person's Survival Play Book) will like as not find their stock in their own self worth quickly rising as they realize just how valid they are as human beings. And while this is going on those used to trading on designer names and fancy addresses will be treated to that one thing so precious to every human being - the opportunity to realize they're valued simply for who they are.

This matters because its part of the lesson of our times. By now you may be tired of hearing about Pluto leaving Sagittarius and entering Capricorn, but since Pluto seems to strike the thematic hour in our solar system, in the sounding of Capricorn o'clock we have all been moved from the spiritual work of seeking to the certainty of knowing.

In moving from Sagittarius to Capricorn, Pluto has moved from the receptive and reactive side of the horoscope wheel to the proactive side. So while for the last 140-odd years (roughly the whole of the industrial revolution) we've imagined and worked on how to make our own lives better, now we get to do what it takes to take care of the world.

One of the questions put to me by a friend rather recently was about materialism. He wanted to know whether I thought the materialism of the 1980's more serious than the materialism of today. My initial answer was 'today,' but the real answer is that they're one and the same. The 1980s is when the Pluto in Virgo tribe came of age, and as each generation comes to adulthood their challenges become that of the general society. So the rampant materialism and all the greed and competitive showing and flaunting of wealth which has become so prevalent has been a function of that time, helpfully broadcast far and wide as Pluto moved into Sagittarius, sign of dissemination of information by whatever means.

We're now in a moment when the Pluto in Scorpio tribe is coming of age. With that have arisen the quintessentially Scorpionic issues of debt and credit. Moving forward, the Scorpio issue of power and control are likely to mean life or death for thousands, maybe millions.

Yes, what we do now counts. Under Capricorn, making things all about you and yours becomes less attractive - even ugly - yet that doesn't mean there won't be those who will go in that direction anyway. But no matter what their excuses are, if you look closely, you'll see that they're doing what they're doing out of defensiveness as Capricorn's negative side can cause people to feel threatened by losses physical, mental, emotional or physical. And it doesn't matter what end of the life spectrum they're on - fear can foster negative motivation in the powerful as easily as in the powerless. Sometimes even more easily, since only those what have - whatever it is they have - can be threatened with loss.

And yet we all actually know better. The faith, the grasp on how clever and ingenious we actually are as human beings - all that was learned under Pluto in Sagittarius. And all we learned over the past decade plus - that's supposed to become a force for unification, an inspiration and light when life looks bleak or dangerous or cold. The lesson isn't about being right or exerting might. Nor is it about sitting in judgment. It's about being human - that's what Sagittarius is really all about learning: what it means to be human, from science to religion, from education to media to politics to religion. In Sagittarius we imagined and we idealized, and now we face facts and in doing so, experience many feelings: pride, regret, wonder, trepidation, courage and humility. In being the most worldly of signs and about the concrete quality of reality, Capricorn forces us to acknowledge all we have wrought and been, some of which isn't pretty. But in doing so, these years which open before us also offer us the opportunity to require of ourselves that we do the right thing and be the kind of people we really know we should be.

Which, considering how vastly brilliant the conception and creation of humanity is... well, that says a great deal - if not everything.
